McCanns: Now police believe us over Madeleine
EXCLUSIVE Police finally accept Madeleine was snatched
By Stewart Maclean 30/10/2007

Kate and Gerry McCann got a massive boost last night as Portuguese police finally acted on their unwavering conviction that Madeleine was kidnapped.

Six months into the case, officers staged a reconstruction of the night the four-year-old was taken from her holiday flat.

A close friend of the couple said: "At last, after all these months, Kate and Gerry's story is being believed. They are very encouraged by the re-enactment of Madeleine's abduction and that police now accept their version of events - because that is what happened.

"They have always insisted that she was taken from the flat and want the police to concentrate on finding her. This is a positive step towards that."

The new officer in charge of the case Paulo Rebelo and six detectives spent three hours at the McCanns' flat in Praia da Luz yesterday.

The team thoroughly examined the windows and shutters before leaving the block to pace out possible escape routes.

One officer then passed a large bundle through the window of the bedroom where Madeleine was sleeping to re-enact the moment an abductor could have snatched her on May 3.

Another detective clambered through the window. The team also checked other key locations in the probe, including the home of suspect Robert Murat and the house of Sergei Malinka, a computer expert linked to Murat.

One holidaymaker said: "I noticed them around the apartment block in the afternoon.

"The man in charge seemed to be gesturing to the others as if he was directing them through different scenarios."

Rebelo's reconstruction is the clearest sign since he took the reins of the probe three weeks ago that he believes Madeleine was snatched from the flat.

It is a reversal of sacked predecessor Goncalo Amaral's belief that Kate and Gerry were responsible for their daughter's disappearance. This led to them being named suspects.

The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "We welcome any indication that the Portuguese police are taking the abduction theory seriously because that is what happened."

Blood in car matches Maddie's: report
September 11, 2007 - 8:14AM

DNA tests have reportedly matched blood found in the boot of a car hired by the family of Madeleine McCann to the missing four-year-old.
But the director of the Portuguese judicial police said it was not certain that traces of blood found in a car rented by British couple Kate and Gerry McCann matched Madeleine's.
Portuguese police are due to hand a file of evidence against the McCanns to the public prosecutor, who will decide whether to charge them.
Sky News UK reported today that Portuguese police found DNA evidence - a full match - indicating that the British girl's body was in the boot of a car the McCanns rented five weeks after her disappearance.
The station cited unidentified sources. Police would not confirm the report.
Madeleine's disappearance on May 3 from a hotel in southern Portugal, and her parents' publicity campaign to find her, has attracted worldwide attention.
Police on Friday named her parents as suspects. Both have denied any role in Madeleine's disappearance.
The case took a turn in recent days, when Portuguese police said forensic tests on evidence gathered months after the girl vanished found traces of blood in the couple's car. The traces, apparently missed in earlier tests, were uncovered by sniffer dogs brought from Britain.
The McCanns say Madeleine vanished from a hotel room in Portugal's Algarve region, where she and her siblings were sleeping, while her parents ate dinner at a nearby restaurant.
Portuguese police said they expected to hand-deliver tomorrow to the McCanns the results of their investigation into Madeleine's disappearance tomorrow.
The McCanns, who returned to Britain on Sunday with their two-year-old twins, kept a low profile today, avoiding reporters camped outside their home.
It has been suggested that the DNA may have come from Madeleine's favourite stuffed toy - Cuddle Cat - that Kate McCann carried around for months after the disappearance.
"I would have thought Madeleine's DNA is all over Cuddle Cat, so wherever Cuddle Cat goes, some of Madeleine's DNA gets left behind," former detective chief inspector Peter Kirkham told Sky News.
A forensic expert said it was possible for DNA to be transferred from an object.
"If I shake hands with someone, for example, then get into my car, it's likely that their DNA would be transferred into my car," forensic scientist Pofessior Allan Jamieson told Sky.
"If they've handled objects that I then pick up and then take into my car, then also that would allow the DNA to transfer into my car."
