We have four cats. We used to have five but Todd crossed the Rainbow Bridge earlier this year. Last night at one of our weekely trivia sessions, one of the questions was "which of the senses do cats develop last?" I coudn't resist it. I had to yell out what I thought was the correct answer (you are not supposed to yell out answers).

What did I yell? "Common!"

BTW - the true answer is sight.

LOL you are too funny, cats have common sense they just think they are superior and don't have to use it. I wonder why sight is the last to develope, I don't think I knew that.

Sight is the last to develop because cats are born with their eyes closed. So they have to rely on touch and smell as soon as they are out of the womb. Taste and hearing are very quickly developed so the kittens can eat. Sight comes weeks later when the eyes open and remains the cat's least develop sense of all. They have to acquire their night vision and that's really not that great.

That's Rich's Cat 101 course.

It reminds me of our little ones. Their vision comes into focus slowly as first they need to see our faces and food sources. As I recall the average focal distance for a new born is 13" (?) and they see high contrast things best.

Are you talking humans? Because if you are comparing a cat to a human, then we should probably keep this thread a secret. If the cats would read this, the world would come to an end. Cats compared to humans, indeed!!

ok.. I know this one. I did a lot of research when my cat had her 5 kittens a few months back.

The hearing is abtually the last to develop. The ear canals are completely sealed until the kitty is 3 weeks old, whereas the eyes open in about 9-14 days and only take a few days to learn to focus.

That is very interesting to know. Our trivia guy it's 100% accurate so we'll let him know. Do you know what your source is? We like to tell him so he can research for his future shows. Thanks!!
