Last night, as we are sitting on the couch downstairs and Todd, our oldest cat is stretched out on the fireplace hearth cooling himself off a bit, Rich says "you know, Todd's really slowing down, I'm worried about him".
Todd is nine years old. He's our king cat of the five. He rules. We adopted him and his litter brother the day before they were due to be put down because no one in the prrevious seven months who visited the animal shelter in Council Bluffs, Iowa wanted to take two almost grown cats into their home. I will post pictures in a couple of days but Todd is a beautiful orange tabby with the "W" mark on his forehead. He is regal. He doesn't walk, he saunters. His brother, Tyler (they were named after a local radio DJ duo in hopes to get them adopted - it worked) crossed the Rainbow Bridge but Todd is still going strong.
Until Rich said what he said. Now I find myself checking Todd every half hour to make sure he's breathing. *I* never noticed anything different but just the thought. If anything happens to Todd (and I know it will and have been through pet deaths before), I will loose it. And so will Rich.
Todd is healthy is every respect but just hearing what Rich said is upsetting. We are going away this weekend. Todd and the other four cats will be taken care of by a certified petsitter and I know she'll do her usual great job.
But man, I was smacked in the face that Todd isn't going to be here forever.
